So why did we trade away the best pitcher in baseball

We were continually improving, had the best pitcher in baseball, and we trade him away for scraps? Why??? I apologize as I assume this has been answered already plenty of times on this sub but I can’t wrap my head around it. We were only getting better and then we go and do this? Doesn’t make sense to me
