Has everyday speech in Croatia become much cruder over the years?

Language 🗣️

I’m afraid I know the answer, but I’d love to be wrong.

I first came to Croatia more than 40 years ago to work in a refinery. It was a refinery, so, you know, speech was pretty crude, and the first words I learned related to female anatomy and the possessive of female relations. And verbs, of course. But when we left the refinery, we left those words behind and would have been viewed as low class and crude if we did not. I have a vivid recollection of saying ‘zajebancia’ at dinner and being slapped simultaneously by Croatian women on either side of me (I thought it just meant ‘fooling around’ LOL).

But today, I’m retired and living on the Dalmatian coast and in summer season, we’re surrounded by neighbors that we can hear pretty clearly. And boy do they swear. Grandmother’s, fathers, mothers and children all in the presence of one another and all of the time. People from everywhere - Zagreb, Dalmatia, Posavina. It’s just ubiquitous.

Is this a false impression (please tell me yes)? Or did things become cruder during and after the war for independence? We came back frequently in the intervening forty years, but I didn’t really notice until we moved here for retirement.
