What I see new drivers get marked down for most on the Ontario G2 road test (from someone who does this daily)
I teach in Scarborough and sit through a lot of pre-test lessons, so here are the recurring things that cost people points — none of it is about "tricks," it is about habits you can drill on any quiet street.
Shoulder checks that do not happen. Mirror check and a real shoulder check before every lane change, every turn, and when leaving a parked position. Examiners watch your head, not just your signal.
Rolling stops. At a stop sign, the car has to actually stop — wheels dead — behind the stop line, then creep for the view. "Slow enough" is not stopped.
Speed for the conditions. Doing the limit in a school zone or past parked cars can read as not adjusting. Under-driving (going 15 under for no reason) gets flagged too.
Blind-spot habits at intersections. Scan left-right-left; do not just glance once and go.
Space and positioning. Following too close, drifting wide on turns, or stopping too far into the crosswalk are quiet point-losers.
This is general — I am not describing any specific test or route, and no one can promise a pass. But if you practise these five until they are automatic, you remove most of the avoidable stuff. Happy to answer specific G2/G questions in the comments.
