Weapons as Characterization: Wednesday and Tyler.

Show Discussion

Wednesday’s favorite weapons to use are blades, knives and swords.
“I do like stabbing.” In** **"Woe Is the Loneliest Number”

Stabbing requires getting up close and personal with the victim. This is fitting for Wednesday’s character; She wants to witness her target’s reaction firsthand. She wants a front-row seat to see their suffering.

Although we never see it, it is confirmed that Tyler is a deee hunter, so it makes sense that he is comfortable using firearms. Firearms kill from a distance, creating an emotional and physical detachment between the killed and their victim. This is also fitting for Tyler’s character; Just as a bullet strikes before you have time to react, Tyler’s betrayal did the same thing to Wednesday.

Both Wednesday’s and Tyler’s weapons also reflect their Outcast abilities.

Wednesday’s psychic visions require physical contact with the person of their belongings, making proximity central to her power. In contrast, Tyler’s killings as the Hyde under Laurel’s orders are emotionally detached. He has no personal connection with his victims until Eugene (Wednesday’s first friend at Nevermore) becomes a target. For the first time, Tyler sees the personal impact of his violence through the impact pain it inflicts on Wednesday.
