Bike computer for a runner already using Garmin watch?
Hi everyone,
I’m mainly a runner and currently have all my training data in Garmin Connect through an Epix Gen 2. I recently moved to a new region in Switzerland and I’m starting to get more into cycling, both for training and exploring unfamiliar routes (currently riding around 50 to 80km).
I ride a relatively basic Orbea Avant with Tiagra, so I don’t need a professional racing setup. My priorities are reliable navigation, climb information, decent training metrics and something enjoyable to use.
I’m currently considering:
- Garmin Edge 540, 840, 1040
- Wahoo ELEMNT Bolt 3
- Hammerhead Karoo 3
The Bolt and especially the Karoo seem to have nicer interfaces, but I’m concerned about losing the unified Garmin Connect experience. As I understand it, I would need to record every ride simultaneously on my Epix to keep my Garmin training load, recovery and fitness data complete. With a Garmin Edge, I could use the watch as a HR monitor and have everything sync automatically.
Is staying with Garmin worth it for this reason? Would you choose the Edge 540, 840 or is the larger touchscreen on the 1040 worth the additional cost for navigation? Alternatively, is the Karoo/Bolt experience good enough to justify recording on two devices?
I’d appreciate opinions from runners or multisport users who have faced a similar choice.
Best !
