Nothing wrong with sticking to defaults

tl;dr Sticking to defaults when playing a game is probably a good idea, maybe on any OS

I have been playing FFXIV on CachyOS for a while, using the forked RB-XIVLauncher and initially there weren't any issues, but at some point I started getting crashes on shutdown with a stacktrace in various but not consistent DLL. For a while I thought this is just the price of gaming on Linux, and still in generally preferred it to booting back into Windows. Though when the crashes would sometimes result in needing to restore settings from backup it was feeling a bit tedious.

Eventually, I remembered I had tweaked things quite a lot, proton version, ntsync, nvapi, etc, so many settings that seem to have stronger versions than the defaults! But finally I had the bright idea to reset to defaults if it affects anything.

No more crashes. Quite embarrassed to have been blaming Linux 😂 Eventually I tried gradually enabling things and found that Proton seemed to always cause the problem, both cacyos-slr and the launcher bundled rb-proton. On the flip side, using ntsync-patched wine with ntsync is fine and what I settled on.

So in the end I guess I can't get out of trying to tweak... But sticking to the defaults seems like a great way to avoid "Linux issues".
