AIO because my boyfriend's old messages completely changed how I see our relationship?
My boyfriend and I have been together for over 2 years.
Recently, I was looking through his phone (he has told me multiple times throughout our relationship that he doesn't care if I go through it and has even said he likes it because it shows I care), and I found old messages from before we started dating.
Someone asked him if he was interested in me, and he replied, "not really."
They asked if he found me attractive, and he said, "idek."
I also found messages where he said he'd heard bad things about me, those being that I was annoying, fake, and that people didn't know why he'd even consider to talk to me. He also said that if he did date me, he didn't think it would be a long-term thing.
What hurt even more was finding messages where he said he mainly wanted to be in a relationship before high school ended just so he could say he'd been in one. He was debating whether to pursue me or another girl, and when people told him he shouldn't go for me because the other girl was "better" and "nicer," he agreed.
The part that's really messing with my head is that I actually know the other girl. During our relationship, I've asked him about her before, and he always told me he never found her attractive, they barely talked, he never considered dating her, and he never wanted a relationship with her.
But the messages I found make it seem like he was considering her and comparing the two of us.
Now I don't know what to believe.
Throughout our relationship, he's constantly called me beautiful, tells me I'm the prettiest girl ever, compliments me all the time, and has never made me feel unattractive. Before finding these messages, I never questioned that he loved me or was attracted to me.
I'm trying to figure out if I'm letting old high school messages get to me, or if the fact that they seem to contradict what he's told me over the past two years would shake anyone else's trust too.
If you found messages like this, would you be able to move past them? Would you see them as immature high school behavior, or would the contradictions make it hard to trust what you've been told since?
