Severe hair breakage; please help!
I feel like I’m already doing so much, but I still find tons of short hairs on my pillow each morning (and everywhere else in the house). My hair texture also looks crazy because this has been going on for a while (a few years actually, but it’s gotten worse) and all the hairs have different lengths. I think part of it is regrowth, but the new hair isn’t getting a chance to actually grow. My hair is just above my shoulders.
What I’m doing/I did already:
- Bamboo lyocell satin pillowcases (animal friendly alternative to silk and just as soft)
- A patch test at my derm and since then cut out everything I react to (2 years ago so no recent change)
- Rotate a mild, fragrance free urea shampoo with Kelual ds anti dandruff shampoo
- Don’t use regular conditioner because my hair is so short and still haven’t found one that didn’t make my hair greasy/heavy. I just ordered an aloe hair mask for fine hair though; curious to see what it does.
- Use a very lightweight conditioning/styling product with heat protection (Virtue 6-in-1)
- Used a hydrocortisone scalp lotion for itchy scalp for a while (dealt with different types of eczema my whole life). That was only for short-term. I now have a scalp urea lotion from Eucerin for when my eczema flares up - maybe using this more frequently could help with scalp health?
- Only use my Dyson for rough drying the last 10-20% to prevent dandruff from a moist scalp, always with heat protectant (but maybe I should use more? more makes my hair feel sticky and greasy, whatever product I use. I now only use like a 2-3 pea size amount)
- No tight hairstyles and only using silk scrunchies or a claw clip if I’m wearing it up
- Several blood panels over the years; they never found anything other than slightly low B12 and D. I supplemented these before but upped my dose since then.
- I don’t color my hair. I get it cut every 3-6 months or so, and almost never have split ends. I can’t find any in my hair now.
- I use a wide tooth comb very carefully when my hair is still wet (otherwise it dries crazyyy frizzy) and a flexible or boar brush once every 1-2 days. My hair doesn’t really tangle.
- Diet: I eat mostly plant-based and focus on my macros/nutrients pretty intuitively (have been eating like this for 15+ years so kinda know how/what I need to eat by now). I do have a sweet tooth though. I don’t smoke, don’t drink, and don’t do drugs.
My hair has become a frizzy mess with hairs sticking out everywhere. Also on the sides, because the breakage happens on all different lengths. I also got my very first few white strands and they’re even weirder in texture. I’m desperate of fixing it even a little. If you can relate or have tips, please share!
