stuck between becoming a U.S. Foreign Service Officer or a political journalist/commentator.
Hi everyone,
I’m 18 and about to start college, and I’ve been trying to figure out what career fits me best.
I was born in the Middle East, so I’ve always been interested in Middle East politics and history. I’ve wanted to understand why conflicts happen, why extremism develops, and how diplomacy or good policy can help reduce it.
I’ve also always loved watching political debates, congressional hearings, committee sessions, and discussions where people challenge each other’s ideas. When I watch, I usually catch myself debating along in my head and thinking about the questions I would ask.
As I got older, I really enjoyed U.S. History and became interested in American politics. I also became fascinated with Washington, D.C., foreign policy, and international affairs.
Then I started looking into the U.S. Foreign Service. I loved the idea of diplomacy, representing the United States overseas, working at embassies, and being involved in international affairs. For a while, I thought that was exactly what I wanted.
The problem is that the more I learn about the job, the more I worry it’s not actually the right fit. It seems like a lot of reading, writing reports, and working behind the scenes. I know there’s travel and interesting meetings, but I’m not sure I’d enjoy that being my full-time job.
What I really enjoy is:
Reading political news every day.
Following U.S., European, and Middle East politics.
Watching people like Mehdi Hasan and Piers Morgan Ben Shapiro or Jonathan Conricus.
Listening to interviews and political debates.
Thinking about how I would question guests or argue different viewpoints.
I don’t really want to become a politician or diplomat, and I don’t think I’d enjoy spending my whole career writing reports. I also don’t want to become famous through social media.
What sounds exciting to me is interviewing politicians, debating important issues, explaining current events, and maybe one day becoming someone people turn to for analysis on Middle East politics.
So I’m honestly stuck.
Based on what I’ve described, does it sound like I’d be happier as:
A political journalist?
A political commentator? If so how would I achieve this
A U.S. Foreign Service Officer?
Something else?
I’d really appreciate advice from people who work in these fields or know them well.
