Newly rehomed gsd- 28days together exactly.
Hi guys. I have a male gsd, just less than 5 years of age. Intact and very sweet in his personality, but not really much acknowledgment for me outside. I am aware sniffs, smells and scents are important. But not leash trained with me. Never aggressive with me, not even 1 growl. He actually came to me pretty nervous. This is my first experience of having or just seeing a dog afraid or anxious around a floor broom/brush. He also came to me underweight, that was why I got him of his private seller quite quick. He wasn't on a proper diet, 2 bowls of dry kibble a day that wasn't suitable for him or his skin/coat. He is working with the vet, for reasons I will include. And he is steadily putting weight on since I've had him. It's been 28 days exactly today. So I'm aware it's not long. Despite all this seeming positive? I have just been dragged down for the second time from him on my own doorstep. I just wrote a draft text out to the previous owner, a text I will know I'll never send. Maybe it was me my self trying to perceive my own situation from another outside perspective. This was what I wrote, what I will never send. I got him from these people underweight and with the 2 health issues mentioned they didn't tell me. And just to clarify. 0% signs of aggression. He is wary of men I got told, but men can walk past us on the leads without his reaction because how I'm dealing with him if one walks past. Even if men are standing close talking to me, he gives no reactions not even watches them. But naturally I'm still not allowing men to pet him just incase. I feel guilty even making this post. And when I refer to my other gsd, he is my family dog living in a separate property to me and Shadow. I feel overwhelmed by this french bulldog interaction that just happened less than an hour ago.
- Hi, I just thought I would let you know. Shadow is doing great. Although he has an ear infection and a bladder infection I discovered by observing him in the first few days. I know in the add it did explicitly say would prefer to be a only dog, as he has been. But in the first 2 weeks he grabbed my family dog by the face and neck and dragged me to the floor for another shih-tzu barking on his own property. In the last 2 weeks to now he has attacked a chihuahua and bit my leg in the process where I needed a tetanus the same day, due to me trying to intervene to make sure this little dog got no harm. And he has just dragged me to the floor for the second time attacking a french bulldog, biting my ankle again in the process. In nearly 6 years despite my German Shepard being double his size he has never took none of us to the floor or harmed other dogs in or outside his property, nor does he go for them if they go for him. I don't know what to do as he really is such a sweet beautiful dog, but outside our property. He just has no regards for me, the one who is holding his leash. No leash training but I did witness my self how good he walked on the lead for your self, but over crossing my steps with hard sudden movements if he wants to sniff something or if he sees little dogs. You had him on a halti collar and for my own preference or maybe reasons of his comfort, I removed the halti head collar. Since I got him of my German Shepard's neck he hasn't been going for bigger dogs like he was reacting to them all, despite us not even allowing our German Shepard's to react. He actually didn't react because I got shadow of him immediately. But my dogs face and neck was wet with his saliva where he tried his best to latch on to the side. I have never had a dog that was so reactive to other dogs before, but again now it only seems to be little dogs which is making me more scared to take him out. This is also my first experience of being dragged to the ground by a dog, despite the discomfort of it. Its making me more scared incase another bypasser dog gets closer one day, as he has done this twice now. But it's the second time in 2 weeks I have a bite from him in the same place, and as both they are instantly raised swollen and broken skin from his teeth marks. And just the moment before he dragged me down again just now, before I had chance to pull my dog away. The french bull dog was just happy wagging his tail very calm body language and demeanour just sniffing about. It was shadow to start that altercation to a dog that didn't even reach his knee height. Although my other Shepard is true in his ways of being very aloof to anybody outside the family, he is so submissive and gentle and careful around little dogs. I love all dogs, not just Shadow. But I feel scared before I even open my front door to take him out.
Just for a quick history. The previous owner told me, when Shadow was a pup. For whatever reasons unknown to me and possibly her, after I don't know how long. They brought him back to the original owner. Then I don't know how long after that, the previous owner had him. And he may have been with them for a few years. This dog is very sweet natured with me. Came to me quite nervous again as I said. He had 1 house accident on day 1 which I brushed of with a smile, but his reaction devastated me. I asked in a silly quiet voice what he was doing cocking his leg up in my living room, and he instantly lowered his body to the floor. Left the room, came back in cowering and just very fearful. Tail tucked, his tongue what looked to be appeasement. Before he came back into the room I was already on my knees waiting to tell him it's okay, but that reaction was heartbreaking. This dog deserves love, so much love. But I don't think it's normal I should have to be scared for other dogs when I take him out. Sorry for the long post guys. I'm overwhelmed but this dog deserves the right support. Any help or guidance, advice is welcomed.
