Need career advice from embedded/VLSI engineers
Hi!
I am a 2023 CSE grad (BE) and currently I have 3 years or full time experience, during these years I have worked on various things ranging from AOSP to Linux kernel driver development to bare metal firmware. but I would not say I have super confidence in any (apart from AOSP)
I would say I can find my way around embedded development but still I would not consider myself to be well versed in embedded development.
I enjoy working at low level software, more than I used to enjoy web and app dev (which I used to do during my internships)
Lately, I have been intrigued with even lower level like chip design and core electronics, now what I am confused about is that my company is not a VLSI company, otherwise I would have thought of talking up on projects and see if that is actually interesting and fun to me or not. The main product of my company are games, but I work on the platform side so I got some exposure to the embedded development and lower level stuff.
So now what do you guys think I should do?
I have thought one of these to be my next goals:
- Give more time to learning more about embedded like linux kernel or bare metal programming and stay in embedded, but a more embedded focused company.
- Do the previous step but try to switch to an embedded role in a VLSI company and then try to switch internally
- Or do Masters in electronics
- If I plan to do masters through GATE, I am not sure if I will be able to prepare and perform well in 2027 with my full time job.
- If I don't do GATE and do any executive/distant learning program is that effective/valuable?
- What about the opportunity cost?
One thing that I would like to add is that I do have responsibility of my family (parents and brother) so financially I don't think I can afford leaving a full time job and do masters for 2 years.
but at this point as you might be able to tell, I am super confused, please help what do I do!
