My husband’s (27m) best friend Frank (27m) and their wife Nicole (29f) think that it’s funny and they’re happy slurs like f*gg*t and r*t*rd are coming back.
Frank (white) has been comfortable saying n*gg*r since I’ve met them over a decade. He also says the above slurs but the last time we meet he was saying them so much more…
My husband (asian) doesn’t use these words unless he’s with them.
When Frank and Nicole (white) disclosed they’re happy these slurs are making a comeback, just like every other time they say some wild things I’m (25f wasian) so absolutely shocked. I can’t bring myself to say anything and the moment passes but I can’t help but dwell on it.
We lived far away from Frank and Nicole before so it wasn’t that big of a deal, I felt terrible being around them but I sucked it up cause that’s my husband best friend. but recently we have moved significantly closer. We’ve seen them more during this year than the past 5 combined.
Honestly my problem is I feel like im the crazy one.
After our last visit to Frank and Nicole’s (where they shared their joy for these slurs) I told my husband that I got major ick when he used these words. When we talked deeper about it he compared the word f*gg*t to the word stupid, asking what’s the difference. I compared f*gg*t to g**k (slur against Koreans) and maybe he understood it more then.
More context, my husband is a people pleaser. He also grew up being made fun of cause he was asian in a white town. He laughed it off then and he’s still doing it now. He has expressed annoyance to me that most the jokes from Frank are that my husband is asian.
If they weren’t my husband’s best friend I would have begged to cut them off for 1. Being maga supporters 2. Their stance on immigrants (called them dirty, saying they should go back from where they came from). 3. Saying the n-word (Nicole once said to me “dirty like a n*gg*r.” I never heard that phrase, I asked her to explain, she said it’s just a saying. That’s where that ended). Frank also screams it randomly cause they think it’s funny. 4. Constantly saying “im not racist” “you guys know we’re not racist right?” If you gotta keep reminding us you’re not racist I think that’s a telling sign.
There’s probably more things but i don’t think it’s prevalent to the above.
I feel like im crazy for not thinking slurs against groups of people are funny.
Do i approach Frank and Nicole about what they say? I don’t know if my husband would back me.
