[M4F] Asian Daughter-in-Law
The tepid, moist air wafting up from the manicured lawn a few floors below filled his nostrils with the scent of freshly cut grass as the sounds of the waning evening in the corporate park slowly brought him back from the 10-day trance of this most recent work trip. Ten days, three continents, and five countries was a punishing undertaking for even the most youthful and fit of his employees, yet, despite nearly doubling their age, Sturm had a reputation for single minded intensity and physical endurance that made many a twenty-something dread the prospect of staffing the “old man” in one of his frequent treks abroad.
Since his days as nearly penniless Army enlistee on his first tour in the ROK, Sturm had had a nearly maniacal propensity for work. Over time, this quest to perform (or, as he would readily admit in moments of introspection, this fear of failure) had led to unparalleled professional success and a seemingly picture-perfect family life. And yet, it was at times like this—sipping a well-aged cognac on shirtsleeves watching the creeping dusk from the spacious balcony of his executive suite—that Strum reminisced about his past and the incipient passions and beckoning pursuits left parked along the way.
What an irony, thus, that Johnny’s first formal college girlfriend would be the spitting image of that first fork on Strum’s road. Strum had been immediately struck by Mira’s uncanny resemblance to the young half-Korean woman he had turned down one night in Itaewon so many years ago. While not formally engaged, he had been ostensibly in a serious relationship with N. and despite already knowing he belonged to that class of individuals for whom love and desire are two neatly bifurcated paths that only occasionally touch, he had succumbed to conventionalism and remained “true” to the woman he would later wed.
What irony, thus, that Johnny’s first formal college girlfriend would be the spitting image of that first fork on Strum’s road. The difficulty Strum had that first night at dinner not staring at Mira’s lithe form, plum lips, and faint nose did not ease during the many months she dated Johnny. Every time she came around—whether in flared jeans, flowery dresses, or yoga pants—a jolt of electricity in Strum’s loins awakened his senses to her and rekindled long dormant desires.
There had been much consternation at home when Mira broke up with Johnny—N. thought her the perfect daughter in law: beautiful, congenial, and extremely bright—but deep down inside Strum, at a level just
below active consciousness, welcomed the unhappy news. Despite being his son, Johnny had never had the mental and physical wherewithal to properly mentor and groom Mira and help her fulfill the destiny promised by her many attributes and talents.
It had been no accident Mira had come to rely on Strum for support and advice during her period of sadness. Despite the physical attraction, he had always remained respectful, friendly, and engaging, capital he built on to proactively reach out to Mira and offer a kind ear and a helping hand in her distress.
The occasional after school ride in the chauffeured Suburban limo increasingly became hour-long therapy sessions in the parking lot by the lake of the corporate park housing Sturm’s firm. Seemingly inadvertent brushes in the heat of discussion gave way to deliberate touches as Strum sought to bring Mira closer emotionally and physically.
One day, following a consolatory embrace during which Mira buried her sobbing face on his shoulder, Strum slipped two fingers under the elastic band of her sports bra, simultaneously lifted her head with the other hand, and carefully laid his lips on hers. Avidly, he laid her down on the back of the limo and carefully removed her clothes over her increasingly faint protests.
