Made a player cry
Not as bad as the title sounds. I’ve been DMing a campaign for about 3 years now with a 6 month break in between. We’ve been back for 7 session as of Friday, and everyone is very into it.
Watching shows like critical roll, dimension 20, etc makes me crave emotional responses from the players and their characters. We had an incredible session this past Friday where the party finally found out there was a betrayal within the part (a player killed another player’s lover at the behest of her patron) and as she (in character) finally admitted what she did, there was almost tears, I could see them welling. And then later in that same session, the betrayer had a mini redemption arc that she had to do alone, and in the process she ended up mercy killing an old acquaintance. As she was dying, she smiled at the party member and thanked her for “a warm cloak in a cold dungeon” which is a throwback to going on two years ago now. One of the players that was watching (character not present) just starts balling.
I know it may be hard to understand without the full context, but I have to say that that was my proudest moment as a DM. To have a player so immersed in the roll play and feel comfortable enough to let themselves feel the things their character would feel. Does anything else about this game ever top that feeling of making your players cry?
