Discussion about The Warthogs in Fantasticland

SpoilerDiscussion

I just finished Fantasticland by Mike Bockoven, and I loved it! I think it was a fun (very quick) rollercoaster of a novel and I enjoyed how there were a few plot points left almost solely to the imagination. For example, cannibalism was touched on but never truly discussed and I loved that you have to fill the blanks in yourself, it made the fake news story that the book is feel very real and made me feel guilty for imagining. But one thing I haven’t been able to stop thinking about and really wanted to hear other people’s opinions about was The Warthogs. The interview with the kid who hides out in the hotel and is hunted by them is one of the only mentions of them in the book, and they are a very fascinating concept to me. I’ve seen discussion online implying they were supernatural, that they could have been two teenagers who went far off the deep end very quickly, but I was picturing during my read that they weren’t connected to the staff at Fantasticland at all, and were opportunistic serial killers who could see no help was coming and snuck into the park to hunt with impunity. I would love to hear anyone else’s thoughts and interpretations of The Warthogs and any thoughts about the novel in general!
