Pricing question - first large tattoo

hey y’all I’m new to this and have a question regarding pricing. I am getting a large memorial piece done. Fully custom art all color full sleeve. I found an artist I really like but his pricing surprised me so I want to make sure it’s in line before I place my deposit. He quoted me $18,000 to $27,000 depending on how many sessions it took because he charges a day rate not a price per tattoo. Is that normal?
