Disaster Tourism

I have next week off work, and my plan for a few months now has been to take a road trip to Kyushu. One of my main destinations in Kyushu was going to be Kumamoto, which is smack in the middle of the island, and so the sort of place you often drive through anyway. I wanted to revisit the castle (which was finally nearing the end of its restoration after the earthquakes in 2016) and some other sites in the city, and do my usual trick of driving around obscure towns in the countryside that I've never been to before.

Last week there was another major earthquake in the region. The castle is damaged and closed again. Bridges have fallen down, and many major roads in the southern part of the prefecture are shut. Disaster recovery efforts are ongoing.

What would you do in my situation? Would you avoid the area entirely? Would you minimize your time there? Would you actively seek out damaged areas to discover more about the power of nature?
