Week Ahead: After three weeks of chaos, the calendar finally clears out. That's its own kind of risk.
Last week gave us a 9-3 Fed vote, five megacap prints, and a Nasdaq that fell hard Wednesday and ripped 2.8% Thursday. This week is quieter on paper. Worth thinking about what that actually means.
The lineup:
Monday: ISM manufacturing. Consensus around 54, up from 53.3. Prices paid expected to ease to 70 from 73.
Tuesday: JOLTS job openings. SpaceX reports its first results as a public company, plus Palantir and AMD.
Wednesday: ADP employment, ISM services. The prices paid component is the one to watch for anyone still tracking the inflation path. Disney and Eli Lilly report.
Thursday: Q2 productivity and unit labour costs, jobless claims, Challenger job cuts.
Friday: July non-farm payrolls at 8:30 ET. This is the week.
Three things I'm thinking about:
June payrolls were a disaster and nobody talked about it. 57,000 jobs against 115,000 expected, with April revised down 31,000 and May down 43,000. That got buried under Fed week and earnings. If July comes in soft too, a two-month pattern is much harder to dismiss than one bad print, and the whole hike conversation flips into something else entirely.
The bond market is still the interesting story. Last week markets cut near-term hike odds while the 30-year yield rose more than 9 basis points. Short end and long end disagreeing means one of them repricing, and jobs data is the kind of thing that forces the issue.
Quiet weeks are where positioning builds. Three weeks of back-to-back catalysts meant nobody could hold a view for long. A calm Monday through Thursday lets people build conviction, and Friday tests all of it at once. The setup is the mirror image of two weeks ago when everything was crammed into Tuesday.
Also worth noting: next Fed meeting isn't until September 16, so there's a long runway now. Data does the talking.
