Did I ruin our chances of buying a house because I contacted the listing agent directly? Feeling awful.
I’m a first-time home buyer and I feel like I made a huge mistake.
We found a house we really love. Our agent reached out to the listing agent because we wanted to submit an offer, but the listing agent wasn’t responding. I got anxious because there was already an offer on the table and another interested buyer, and I was worried we’d miss our chance.
I ended up texting and calling the listing agent myself just asking him to please connect with our agent because we wanted to make an offer. I was not trying to negotiate directly or go around our agent.
Later, the listing agent explained he was at his mother’s celebration of life and couldn’t respond at the time. He apparently texted our agent afterward and was upset that I contacted him directly. My agent was also frustrated with me and told me it looked bad.
I feel horrible. I truly didn’t know what was going on, and I was just a stressed first-time buyer trying to move quickly. Now I’m worried the seller/listing agent will hold it against us and we won’t even have a chance with our offer.
Did I seriously mess this up? Would a listing agent actually reject a good offer because the buyer contacted them directly? Or am I overthinking this?
