Any positive jaw surgery experiences out there? I'm scared
Hi there! I've been suffering with TMJD for 20 years now. I had braces at 16, was then told I would need jaw surgery, but my parents couldn't afford it and the idea scared me half to death. So I decided to live with the pain. A couple years ago I had my wisdom teeth removed (super late at 34 years old, but they were causing problems), and the oral maxillofacial surgeon who did it took one look at my x ray and said I was headed for a jaw replacement.
My anxiety went crazy once I realized how bad I had let my jaw get. So for the last six months I've been in braces again to try again to close my open bite. We got so close, but of course it is impossible without surgery. So here I am, preparing for this big huge scary thing that has haunted me for 20 years, but I know it's the only thing that might prolong my jaw joint function.
All that to say... I could use some positivity. Have any of you had jaw surgery and it improved things? Or were there some things you feared that turned out less awful than expected? Do any of you like your face shape better after surgery? Any unexpected perks? Anything? I need hope that this will be worth it.
Thanks!
