For people who thought the true ending was a bad ending: why?
I already made a post on this topic recently, but I'm going to try again because, on further consideration, I didn't quite get the kind of responses I was seeking.
To be more clear this time, I want to hear from players who have criticisms towards the concept and execution of the Shooting Star ending and doubt whether it was actually a "good" ending to the story.
I'm not really focused on players who didn't enjoy the Shooting Star ending emotionally, such as those who may have mainly felt sad about Yi sacrificing himself. I'm looking for players who didn't feel that the overall ending and its implications were actually a fitting conclusion to the story or a reasonable, logical, well-executed, and necessary one given what was established and what impression they got of the story's events. I'm especially curious if there are any players who disagree with choosing to write the story in a way that justified a bittersweet or tragic ending—where the Solarian species has virtually no choice but to go extinct soon—as the best or only outcome for the characters in the first place.
It's possible some players may have a personal bias against more bittersweet or tragic endings that influenced their reaction to the Shooting Star ending. But if nothing else, I think it'd be fun to play devil's advocate a bit and see if there's anything about the game's storytelling and narrative choices that genuinely warrants a more skeptical view of whether its true ending was an effective or necessary conclusion, instead of brushing off all criticism of the ending as "they just didn't understand the story" or "they just can't handle stories without conventionally happy endings" or something.
This time, if they're out there, I'd like to hear from players who might, for example...
- Argue that Tianhuo is most likely curable and that it's worth it for Yi to continue looking for a cure
- Think the other Sols didn't have to die or that Yi shouldn't have killed nearly all of them
- Doubt that New Kunlun is truly a lost cause by the time the game begins
- Think saving the Solarians versus saving the Apemen shouldn't have been framed as an either-or dilemma where one's survival necessarily leads to the suffering and/or death of the other
- Feel that Yi positively growing as a character didn't require him to effectively let his own species go extinct in the end
- Disagree with the idea that it's "time for the Solarians to go"
- Question the narrative choice to make Solarian extinction "inevitable" to begin with
- Believe Taoism wouldn't necessarily tell people they have no choice but to tolerate an unwanted fate or else they'll make things worse on themselves and others
...And other takes I've heard much less often so far on the true ending and the story as a whole. In other words, I want to hear out players who think the Shooting Star ending was a "bad" ending in a way, not just a sad but reasonable ending.
