Title: I helped a local business grow with content marketing—here are the biggest lessons
Most small businesses think content marketing means publishing random blog posts and hoping Google sends traffic. That rarely works.
After working on content strategies for small businesses, these are the biggest improvements I've seen:
- Focus on answering customer questions instead of writing generic articles.
- Build one detailed "pillar" guide for each service, then create smaller supporting articles that link back to it.
- Repurpose every blog into social posts, short videos, and email newsletters.
- Optimize every page with descriptive titles, headings, internal links, and image alt text.
- Update older content instead of only publishing new articles.
- Track leads and conversions—not just page views.
One simple content plan could look like this:
- 1 in-depth blog post each week
- 2–3 social media posts based on that blog
- 1 short video summarizing the key points
- 1 email newsletter linking to the article
Consistency beats publishing lots of low-quality content.
What content marketing tactic has worked best for your small business? I'd love to hear what's actually producing leads for you.
