Boyfriend admitted he still misses his ex

When we first started hanging out he would talk about her a lot and cry about how she treated him, I told him if he still had feelings with her I didn’t want to jump into a relationship with him but moving onto a few months later it seemed like he was done with her, he stopped talking about her, so we started dating and have been for a year.

Now jumping to yesterday we were drinking and I was the one who brought it up and asked him if he still misses her and he admitted he still did. He said he misses her cuddles and hanging out with her family but I just don’t understand how he’d miss her after everything she had done to him, she used to have other people go jump him and beat him up and cheat on him.
I just don’t know what to do, he’s my first relationship and I’ve put my all into this and he swears he doesn’t want her that I’m the one he wants to be with, he said that he doesn’t love her anymore.
It just hurt when he told me he still misses her.
I’m not sure what to think.
