Federal employee, looking for Financial guidance/advice
Federal Employee of 26 years and it's all crumbling down. Short of it:
- I make $170K Annually
- Sub 500 Credit Score (due to debt settlement enrollment)
- $200K in equity on my home
- Garnishment for judgement just started ($1K towards $14K judgment)
- Background Investigation Suitability (NEW OPM Project 25 push to eliminate FEDS) knocking on my door.
- I report monthly on the status of the program I am in for debt settlement with our OSI.
$50K would allow me to de-enroll in my debt resolution program to handle all of my outstanding credit and loan accounts. Problem is, with the low credit score, I cannot access any equity through HELOC and I cannot refinance. Additionally, I'm locked in at 2.75% for the home loan.
Before you come for me, over the years I have continuously made horrible financial decisions, along with predatory lenders (One Main Financial being the one that has a judgement against me) . My eyes have been open for about a year, but unfortunately, the credit issues are holding me back. TSP is not an option because I have tapped into it significantly over the years and am literally (pay check to pay check) with the amount available to access.
What are my realistic options? I can worry the $14K ish to resolve the garnishment balance due, but the underlying issue is still there, and I don't want to borrow from someone if it is just a bandage on a gunshot wound.
I have reached out to a bankruptcy lawyer and am awaiting response, but really need some real world advice. Are private lenders a thing, or is everything tied to market places that ultimately push you to debt settlement companies?
