**Avalokitesvara → Siva: Copying, Rebranding, and Appropriation**

**1. Buddhist Origins (No Brahminical Deities)**

**In the Kāraṇḍavyūha Sūtra (4th–6th CE), Avalokiteśvara is supreme.**

**From his forehead: emanates Maheśvara (Śiva).**

**From his heart: emanates Nārāyaṇa.**

**From his teeth: emanates Sarasvatī.**

**From his belly: emanates Varuṇa.**

**These were Buddhist emanations within Mahāyāna–Vajrayāna cosmology, not Brahminical gods.**

**Avalokiteśvara was portrayed as the source of all deities, showing Buddhist supremacy.**

**2. Rebranding into Brahminical Pantheon**

**Later Śaiva and Purāṇic texts inverted the hierarchy:**

**Śiva was rebranded as supreme.**

**Avalokiteśvara’s emanations were renamed as independent Brahminical gods.**

**This was deliberate appropriation: Buddhist deities were copied, renamed, and reframed to consolidate Brahminical dominance.**

**Example: Avalokiteśvara’s compassionate identity was erased, and his emanations were rebranded as “eternal Brahminical gods.”**

**3. Mantras**

**Avalokiteśvara mantra: Oṃ Maṇi Padme Hūṃ — six syllables symbolizing compassion and wisdom.**

**Śiva mantra: Oṃ Namaḥ Śivāya — five syllables symbolizing devotion and cosmic power.**

**Scholars note: the Śaiva mantra was constructed as a counterpart, appropriating the prestige of Avalokiteśvara’s mantra.**

**OM (ॐ) itself shifted: in Buddhism it symbolized emptiness (śūnyatā), later reframed in Brahminical texts as the primordial sound of creation.**

**4. Weapons & Attributes**

**Avalokiteśvara: Lotus (purity), rosary (compassion), vajra (spiritual power).**

**Śiva: Trident (appropriated from vajra), drum, crescent moon, flame.**

**Transformation pattern:**

**Lotus → Flame**

**Vajra → Trident**

**Compassion → Power/Destruction**

**5. Archaeological Evidence**

**Kadri Manjunath Temple (Mangalore, 10th CE): Inscriptions show Avalokiteśvara (Lokeshvara) installed in Kadarika Vihara, a Buddhist monastery. Later rebranded as Śiva’s shrine.**

**Golden Window of Patan (Nepal, 19th CE): Avalokiteśvara depicted emanating Hindu gods, showing Buddhist origin but Brahminical reinterpretation.**

**Sirpur (Chhattisgarh, 7th CE): Avalokiteśvara bronzes found, later absorbed into Brahminical worship.**

**6. Clear Takeaway**

**Avalokiteśvara’s emanations in Buddhist texts were not Brahminical gods — they were Buddhist deities.**

**Later Brahminical traditions copied and rebranded them as independent gods (Śiva, Viṣṇu, Sarasvatī, Varuṇa).**

**Conclusion**

**Avalokiteśvara’s emanations in Buddhist texts were not Brahminical gods — they were Buddhist deities. Later Brahminical traditions copied and rebranded them as independent gods (Śiva, Viṣṇu, Sarasvatī, Varuṇa). This process involved textual borrowing, mantra adaptation, and iconographic transformation, documented in Buddhist sūtras, Purāṇic texts, temple archaeology, and highlighted by Bahujan historians.**

**📌 In short: Avalokiteśvara’s Mahāyāna–Vajrayāna identity was systematically copied and rebranded into Śiva’s Brahminical persona. What began as Buddhist emanations were later inverted, renamed, and reframed as Brahminical gods — a deliberate appropriation evidenced in Buddhist sūtras, Śaiva texts, temple archaeology, and Bahujan scholarship.**
