Daily Framing Watch: One outlet called Louisiana's new map a civil rights victory. Six called it the opposite.

How the left framed it

PBS and CNN led with the Republican seat gain, headlining the elimination of the majority-Black district alongside the new GOP seat the map creates. The Guardian and NYT described the underlying Supreme Court ruling as "weakening" the Voting Rights Act, while The New Republic went further and called the same ruling "overturning" it — the only outlet in the set to use that word.

How the right framed it

The Daily Caller was the only right-leaning outlet in the set to cover the vote. Its headline framed the elimination of the court-ordered majority-Black district as a civil rights win: "Louisiana Puts Another Remnant Of Institutionalized Racism Six Feet Under." The piece treats the map as the dismantling of race-based policy rather than the dismantling of a remedy for past discrimination. No other right-leaning outlet in the set covered the vote at all.

The gap

Six of seven outlets covering this vote are left-leaning or center-left. The Daily Caller filed one piece — and inverted the framing of every other outlet. Readers who follow conservative outlets exclusively, outside the Caller, have no version of this story. Readers who follow left-leaning outlets get a story about a Republican seat gain and a weakened VRA, but no outlet named who would file the expected legal challenge or under what theory.
