How the left framed it
CNBC and DW led with the threat context — both ledes name "growing concerns of a possible U.S. military attack" on Cuba. CNN ran it straight as military news, leading with the rarity of the contact. The Hill, the most center-right outlet in the group, put Trump directly in the headline and tied Gen. Donovan's trip to White House pressure.
How the right framed it
They didn't. Fox News, the New York Post, Breitbart, and the Washington Examiner have all covered Trump's Cuba pressure campaign extensively. None published a word about a US combatant commander holding an unannounced meeting with the military of the country being pressured.
The gap
Readers of right-leaning outlets got the pressure campaign, not the back-channel. Five outlets confirmed the meeting; zero reported what was actually discussed. The meeting is the part of the story that complicates the narrative of maximum pressure working cleanly — which may be why the outlets most invested in that narrative skipped it.
