How the left framed it
The BBC led with the diplomatic dimension, framing the race around "months of public recrimination" between leftist President Gustavo Petro and Donald Trump. Al Jazeera filed twice — once on polls opening, once on candidate detail — calling it "a three-horse race between a left-wing senator, a businessman and a right-wing lawmaker." The Guardian's headline named "pro-Trump candidates" explicitly, while the NYT stuck to candidate and issues context without a strong frame.
How the right framed it
Fox News ran the story under the frame of U.S. security interests, describing right-wing outsider Abelardo de la Espreilla as an "anti-cartel hardliner" who "channels Trump" and noting that Colombia's next president could reshape counternarcotics cooperation. It was the only right-leaning outlet in the entire coverage set — no other conservative U.S. publication filed on the race.
The gap
A Colombian election featuring a self-styled Trump ally, a rupture with the sitting leftist president, and direct stakes for U.S. drug policy drew coverage from the BBC, Al Jazeera, the Guardian, the NYT, PBS, and DW — and exactly one story from the American right. Separately, DW was the only outlet to report the actual first-round result, naming de la Espreilla and Iván Cepeda as the apparent runoff pairing; everyone else covered the race while polls were still open.
