Daily Framing Watch: Trump's $1B crypto haul — "nothing illegal" or a transfer from the people who lost?
Trump defends business dealings and crypto profits in CNBC interview; MAGA base stays quiet

How the left framed it
CNN was the only outlet to name the mechanism: Trump's memecoin gains topped $1 billion while most retail buyers of the coin lost money — turning "$1 billion in crypto profits" into a direct transfer from those buyers to the president. The New York Times went the other way, building its piece around the MAGA base's muted response to the $2.2 billion in reported first-year gains rather than the profits themselves.
How the right framed it
Coverage on the right split. The Washington Examiner ran Trump's own defense — "nothing illegal" — without quoting critics. The Hill surfaced the more unusual thread: the Wall Street Journal's editorial board called the family's conduct "big and sketchy," and Megyn Kelly, speaking to a MAGA audience, called it "grifty." CNBC covered the disclosure and the interview without the retail-loss detail. Fox News is listed as a source but filed nothing that surfaced in the analysis.
The gap
The divide here isn't the usual one. CNN supplied the structural fact — buyers lost while Trump gained — that six of the other seven outlets left out. And the sharpest criticism came from the right's own side, the WSJ board and Kelly, which most coverage on both left and right skipped over.
