A dumb questions from a complete novice

I want to buy a sewing kit to fix a couple of items of clothing I own that have rips/tears in them. Are there specific kits for that or should I just be buying a beginner kit and go from there? I have never sewn or watched someone sew something before so any tips/recommendations would be greatly appreciated!
