3 YOE, still at my joining salary. Where did I go wrong?
Hi everyone,
I honestly don’t know where else to ask this, so I’m hoping people here can give me some direction.
I’m an MBA Finance graduate from a reputed institution. Back in 2023, I got campus placement at a large IT company that works in the BFSI space.
During placements, the role was simply called “Consultant.” During the interview they mentioned it would be a finance-related role, which was exactly what I wanted, so I accepted the offer.
The package was 10 LPA in Bangalore, which felt like a great start as a fresher.
After joining, I got allocated to a digital banking project. My team is based in Pune, and my actual work turned out to be preparing functional specification documents, analysing business requirements, and doing testing. So in reality, I’ve been working as a Business Analyst in the IT domain.
The problem is that after 3 years, I’m still at the same salary I joined with. No promotion. No meaningful hike.
I also feel like my team environment isn’t great. My manager barely interacts with me. All my communication is only with my TL. I’ve always completed my work on time, met deadlines, and never created issues, but I don’t feel like I get any appreciation or even basic visibility.
To be fair, my work isn’t very complex and doesn’t have a lot of dependencies, so maybe I’ve become someone they can just assign work to without thinking much. That’s how it feels anyway.
Another issue is that I still don’t fully understand many of the technical discussions happening around me. I genuinely tried learning on my own over these three years, but I feel I never got proper guidance or training. I brought this up multiple times with my TL, but nothing really changed.
The job itself is comfortable. I don’t have to go to the office regularly because my team isn’t even in Bangalore. Nobody really checks when I come in or work from home. But I know this comfort is becoming dangerous.
I’m almost 28 now. I have very few friends, no partner, and barely any social life in Bangalore. Most days I spend alone in my apartment. It’s a small 12k place in one of the older parts of the city, and I think anyone living in Bangalore knows what that usually looks like. Between supporting my parents and other responsibilities, I can’t really afford to spend much more on rent.
It’s starting to affect me mentally.
The frustrating part is that I don’t think I’m someone who avoids hard work.
Throughout school and college I consistently scored above 80%. I was school head boy, class representative during my MBA, and I’ve always enjoyed taking responsibility.
I’m also very interested in finance and markets. Last year I generated over 20% returns on my own portfolio despite the broader market being bearish and gave negative returns during the period.
Outside work I spend my time learning, researching companies, reading annual reports, writing books, and building projects. I genuinely enjoy doing productive things after office hours.
It’s also not like I haven’t tried to switch.
For the last 3 to 4 months I’ve been applying almost every single day. Easily over 1,000 applications across equity research, finance, business analyst, and product management roles. I tailor my resume depending on the role.
I’ve received only 3 interviews, and unfortunately wasn’t selected in any of them.
At this point I’m questioning everything.
Am I stuck because my experience isn’t valuable enough?
Should I continue trying to move into finance even though I have 3 years of IT Business Analyst experience?
Should I double down on BA/Product roles instead?
Or do I simply need to accept that the current market is this bad?
I genuinely feel like I have more potential than what my current career reflects. More importantly, my parents are no longer earning, so I can’t afford to stay stagnant forever. They are also pushing me to get married but with this kind of a situation, that is not even in the equation.
I’m feeling completely stuck and honestly don’t know what my next move should be.
TL;DR
MBA Finance graduate joined a large IT company in 2023 expecting a finance role but ended up as a Business Analyst on a digital banking project. After 3 years I’m still on the same 10 LPA salary with no promotion or meaningful growth. I’ve applied to over 1,000 jobs in finance, equity research, BA, and product roles over the last few months but only got 3 interviews. Feeling stuck professionally and personally, and looking for advice on what my next step should be.
