3+ years in Embedded Linux. How to specialize?
Hi everyone, I've been working for over 3 years at an electronics manufacturing company as an Embedded Linux Developer. During this time, I’ve worked on several projects, mostly focused on:
C++ software design Board bring-up and system customization using Yocto, U-Boot, Bash, Python, Linux kernel drivers, etc. Designing a Rust-based system architecture from scratch Handling CI/CD and basic DevOps tasks Currently, all of those projects have moved into the maintenance phase. My day-to-day work now mostly consists of updating Yocto recipes and making minor bug fixes. Since I have quite a bit of downtime, I want to use it to prepare for my next job hunt. My main goal is to find a solid domain to specialize in. Up until now, I’ve been a bit of a "jack of all trades," but I’d really like to gain deep expertise in a high-value niche. From my research, Virtualization and eBPF seem to be gaining a lot of traction lately. I’ve also been considering Linux Security / Networking. Is there anyone here with more experience who could share what skills/areas are currently most valued in the industry? Any advice on which path to pick would be greatly appreciated!
