work-study due-date rant from a mildly miffed philosophy student
CONTEXT:
Two days ago, I made this (https://www.reddit.com/r/berkeley/s/8ReE5pR2WN) post on the this subreddit, hoping to clear up whether the deadline to accept your work-study was August 7, 12:00 AM, or August 7, 11:59 PM.
In my arrogance, not even two minutes after I posted it — giddy at having solved the mystery myself, and so soon — I made this comment:
NVM, this resolved itself on its own!
(For those wondering: CalCentral says "Due Aug 7" but when you expand the task, it says "Offer checklist item will remain active until August 6, 2026").
Turns out, it didn't resolve on its own. Because an hour ago, rereading that comment I made, I was subject to two, back-to-back realizations:
Oh, I really ought to add a note designating what the correct time is, for others who happen upon this post.
(A minute later, brows furrowed) Wait, what the hell is the correct time?
RANT:
- CalCentral says "Due Aug 7" (which is itself is ambiguous whether it is August 7, 12:00 AM, or August 7, 11:59 PM (a nearly 24-hour difference), as noted in post)*
- Expanding the task, the text displayed says, "This Accept Work-Study Offer checklist item will remain active "...until August 6, 2026." This contradicting (fig. 1), would make it seem like the deadline is August 5, 11:59 PM.
- Then, only a few sentences later, it also says, "After the August 6 deadline...". Now, the phrase "the August 6 deadline" (charting (fig. 1)'s same logical course) would be either (1) August 6, 12:00 AM, or (2) August 6, 11:59 PM. Now, the earliest one possible times after the "August 6 deadline" (accepting that "after" refers to one-minute, not one-second increments) would be (1) August 6, 12:01 AM, or (2) August 7, 12:00 AM.
To sum, then, CalCentral offers us four differing dates, arranged chronologically here:
August 5, 11:59 PM (fig. 2)
August 6, 12:01 AM (fig. 3) (a two-minute difference)
August 7, 12:00 AM (fig. 3) (a 23-hour-59-minute difference)
August 7, 11:59 PM (fig. 1) (a 23-hour-59-minute difference)
Finally, and to add insult to injury, if we calculate the temporal distance between the first & the last date in the sequence, we get a maximum total difference of (drum roll, please...): forty-eight hours.
In other words, there is a full two-day discrepancy in deadline to accept work-study, owed to nothing more than the inconsistent wording given by CalCentral!
* But in both cases, the day is still falling on the same day: August 7)
VERDICT:
This whole affair has made me slightly (if not rather) miffed. I fart in CalCentral's general direction. Etc, etc
