From 1984 onwards, I used them to travel to the Ruhr region, preferably taking a night train with a sleeping compartment. Departure from Zoo Station was around 10:00 p.m., with arrival in Dortmund around 6:00 a.m. The journey included two border checks: an extensive one at Marienborn conducted by the GDR, involving baggage inspections alongside passport checks, while border guards with German Shepherds inspected the train cars from the outside and the West German check at Helmstedt, where only identification documents were inspected.
