“If it’s not a hell yes, it’s a no” - insights?

Discussion

I would like some insights for the infamous statement “if it’s not a hell yes, it’s a no” because I’ve been stuck in an overthinking loop for a few days now. The statement can obviously go for anything in life but for me right now, it’s relationship-specific.

I know blanket sayings like this are dangerous because life isn’t black and white but I had a talk with my (long distance) boyfriend about the future. I told him I would love to close the gap eventually but I am not in a rush as we both have commitments in our lives that take priority right now, unfortunately. But he gave me the most wishy-washy answer. He said “I don’t know when I can make it happen” so I asked him “Or do you mean if/that you can make it happen?” and reassured him that I’m in no rush because again, I have things to take care of, too. But his answer got me (over)thinking: what if he doesn’t want to close the gap at all? What if he enjoys his current life with the added bonus and benefits of my love and commitment? All my trust issues that I’ve worked so hard to get rid off came rushing back. I do appreciate that he didn’t just tell me what I wanted to hear as in “Yeah in x years” or “soon” but I’m worried that I am wasting my time and money. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind spending money on plane tickets but I see it as an investment into our future. He said we will talk more and in depth about it in person and figure it out next time we meet in person and I am 100% in agreement with it. This needs to be an in person discussion. But it also means I have to fly to him, spend money and am afraid that I’m spending this money to either be broken up with or leave with unresolved things again. And the next visit is scheduled for sometime spring/early summer next year (ah the joys of long distance).
