How hard is it to surrender tenancy in the UK?

Im an incoming student with space secured at Copse Lane, Marston. Its university provided and it’s quite small but was the cheapest thing Ive found so far with an en-suite. Haven’t signed a contract yet but I understand it’s binding for however long the tenancy lasts (Im an international so I have never experienced that) I plan to stay for Michealmas while I search for a bigger space closer to my department or the city centr.

Any one have experience surrendering tenancy?

Is it generally an easy thing to do? How understanding is the university if you can’t find a replacement?

(Might just be freaking a bit about the whole thing)
