the 4 types of leverage and why most people only ever build one that doesn’t scale

I have read something a while back that reframed how I think about career growth. So I just found out that there is basically 4 types of leverage:
labor, content, code, and capital.

  1. labor leverage is just trading time for money, or managing people who trade time for money. it’s the slowest to scale because output stays linear, more hours or more people is the only way to get more.
  2. content leverage scales way better. build something once, a guide, a video, a resource, and it keeps working for you without redoing the labor every time.
  3. code leverage is similar, build it once, sell or use it indefinitely, but it takes way more upfront skill to create.
  4. capital leverage is investing money to make more money, but it needs actual capital to start, so it’s usually the last one people access, not the first.

most people spend their whole career stuck purely in labor leverage without realizing it, trading hours for pay with no compounding involved at all. To the people who break out usually start layering in one of the other three, even in a small way, on top of their regular job.

what’s one thing outside your actual job hours that’s quietly compounding for you right now, if anything?
