Don't know what to do
I never thought I would have to draw this line, but I have.
As I’ve mentioned before, my boyfriend’s 11-year-old son has had issues surrounding rules, especially when it comes to the gaming console. Despite those difficulties, I was genuinely happy when he started coming back over. As a parent myself, I understand how heartbreaking it would be to not see one of your children, and I never wanted that for my boyfriend or his son.
I have always tried to include his kids and make them feel comfortable in our home. I regularly text them asking if they need snacks or anything when they come over, and I try to make sure everyone has what they need. This past Sunday, his son asked for a specific drink, so I ordered a six-pack for him. It wasn't a big deal at all.
When I picked up the order, I didn't realize one of the bottles had broken inside the bag. When we got home, my son and his son were helping bring the bags inside. Because the drink was leaking, the paper bag ripped and the other bottles fell out.
I honestly expected frustration over the spilled drinks. What I did not expect was for his son to become so angry that he physically attacked my son.
It escalated to the point where his sister and I had to physically intervene to get him off of my son.
That was the moment something changed for me.
This isn't about a broken drink. It isn't about a gaming console.
It's about the fact that my child was physically attacked in our home.
I immediately called his mother because my boyfriend still had approximately five hours of work left, and I wasn't going to allow the situation to continue. His mother also told me that he had pushed her the previous week.
There have been incidents of pushing before, but this was different. This was much more serious, and I cannot ignore it.
There are five other children in this home besides him. I cannot allow any child—regardless of whose child they are—to make another child feel unsafe in their own home.
And as difficult as this is for me to say, this is where I draw the line.
I told my boyfriend that I don't know if his son can come back into our home right now. Not because I want to punish him, but because I have a responsibility to protect every child under my roof.
I love my boyfriend, and I care about his children. That's exactly why this hurts so much. But loving someone does not mean ignoring dangerous behavior. Being a blended family means we have to establish boundaries that protect all of the children, not just one.
I don't want to permanently close the door on an 11-year-old who clearly needs guidance and support. But before he comes back into a home with the other children, I need to know that everyone is safe.
I don't expect everyone to agree with me. I know some people will say he's only 11, that children make mistakes, or that I should handle it differently.
Maybe.
But I also know what happened to my child, and I know what it felt like to have to physically pull another child off of him.
As a mother, I cannot ignore that.
My home needs to be a safe place for every child who lives here. And that boundary is not negotiable.
