Looking for recommendations on a salt-free water softener that lasts

Weighing options for our new place since the water here is pretty rough. Everyone talks about how salt based softeners need resin replaced every several years, but nobody really says how long the salt free ones actually hold up before something inside needs replacing or servicing. Is it more of a set it and forget it thing, or does it still need parts swapped out down the line like a normal system would?
