How was your experience/recovery with grade 3 sprains like ?
I have hEDS (diagnosed in 2023), I have had to deal with ankle sprains several times but on Sunday night I had my first (and hopefully last) severe ankle sprain. When it happened I instantly knew that it was much worse than usual. Right after the fall the pain was very intense and the swelling and bruising developped very quickly.
I went to the ER and thankfully it's not broken, I have a grade 3 ankle sprain. I was really pleasantly surprised that there was no fracture, I really thought otherwise because the pain level is genuinely insane.
I was told that during the first week after injury it's normal for the main to be very severe, I was prescribed strong painkillers but the moments while waiting for them to work are hell. I'm a pretty tough person when it comes to dealing with pain (as all of you here know having chronic pain due to EDS will eventually do thzt to someone), but both in the ER and then at yesterday night athome I was crying. The swelling is very significant as well as the bruising which I was told is the reason why the pain radiates so much as the fluid and hematoma press on the nerve endings. The pain was a 9 out of 10 right after injury, an 8 during the "no painkillers" Windows and a 6 medicated.
My ankle is immobilized and will remaon so for 6 weeks, then I will have to do physical therapy for 16 weeks, and then I will have an ankle MRI and be examined by a specialist, if the healing isn't good or if the ankle remains too instable I will need surgery.
The main question I have is when will the worst part of the pain be over ? The doctor I saw in the ER couldn't really tell how my hEDS would affect recovery so I would like to hear from people who have first hand experience.
