Early days of separation looking for tips

Communication

Looking for tips, advice and anything that made your separation and coparenting journey easier, less disruptive for your kids.

I’m very recently separated from my partner of 10 years, we have a toddler together, a mortgage and pets. It wasn’t my choice but as time goes on and I’m opening up to friends about what’s been going on for years, I’m realising it’s the right thing and I do deserve better.

We’re both low income and I have worked part time since our child was born, I’ve gone through all my savings making that work. I think he has a bit in savings. So we will need to continue living together for a few years while we find better paying jobs/save up.

The last few weeks have been really really difficult, he’s very angry and going out a lot. I’m trying to stay as calm as possible but he’s not yet open to discussing how we move forward, mostly ignoring me when our child isn’t around. Luckily he’s still being a good present dad. I’m feeling really anxious about the future, and very worried about how we’re going to cope these first years still living together. I feel on high alert all the time. I’d love to move out but I can’t see any way of financially making that work right now.

So looking for any tips or systems that worked early on to limit conflict? I just want to limit how traumatic this is for my little boy. Hoping me and his dad can eventually be friends in the future.
