A complete 2027-entry guide to Edinburgh Medicine (A100 — 6-year MBChB)

Guide

Next up is the University of Edinburgh Medical School — one of the oldest medical schools in the world (continuous medical training since 1726), with a distinctive 6-year MBChB that includes a mandatory intercalated BMedSci in Year 3. Edinburgh students graduate with two qualifications (BMedSci + MBChB) and the school operates with one of the most rigorously analytical selection systems in UK medicine.

This is the bundle: requirements, the actual admissions numbers, what teaching looks like, where you spend your clinical years, fees, and the honest pros/cons. Sources at the bottom.

TL;DR

  • Course: MBChB Medicine A100 (6-year — mandatory intercalation in Y3)
  • Style: Traditional pre-clinical / clinical split with academically rigorous Y1–2, BMedSci Y3, clinical Y4–6
  • Anatomy: Full-body cadaveric dissection in pre-clinical years
  • Interview: Half-day Assessment Day = 4 MMI stations (10–12 min each) + group exercise
  • Selection: Decile-based UCAT scoring + academic record + reference + personal statement
  • UCAT minimum cut-off (2026): 1,650 (auto-reject below this); competitive scores much higher
  • Entry: AAA at A-level inc Chemistry + Biology (AAA typical for non-contextual RUK)
  • Places (2026): 166 Scottish + 79 RUK + 21 International = 266 total
  • 2026 applications: ~2,830
  • Best for: academically exceptional applicants, those wanting research-intensive intercalation, anyone drawn to Edinburgh's heritage and city

1. Entry requirements

A-levels (standard): AAA including Chemistry and Biology. In practice many successful RUK offer-holders are predicted AAA because of how RUK is weighted.

Scottish Highers: AAAAA at S5 or AAAAB with Advanced Highers AAA inc Chem + Bio.

IB: 38 points with HL 6,6,6 including Chemistry and Biology.

A-level resits: Considered carefully; standard offer applies.

BTEC: Generally not the primary route.

T-levels: Not currently accepted (verify directly).

GCSE: Strong GCSE profile expected (used in academic scoring).

Graduate Entry: Edinburgh does not offer an accelerated A101 graduate-entry programme. Graduates with a 2:1+ in any subject can apply via standard A100 with their degree as supporting evidence.

International: Accepted with a much higher UCAT bar (only 21 places/year).

2. UCAT requirements (decile-based, brutal at the top)

Edinburgh's selection model is rigorously analytical:

  • Minimum UCAT cut-off (2026 entry): 1,650 on the new 2,700-scale
  • Below 1,650 = auto-rejection
  • Above 1,650: ranked by decile within applicant pool
  • UCAT total = 17.5% of total application score
  • SJT = 7.5% of total application score
  • SJT Band 4 = auto-rejection

2025-entry minimum-to-interview scores (old 3,600-scale, for context):

  • Scottish applicants: 2,046 (~equivalent to ~1,535 on new scale)
  • RUK applicants: 2,134 (~equivalent to ~1,600 on new scale)
  • International applicants: 2,690 (~equivalent to ~2,015 on new scale)

Practical: The 1,650 minimum is just a floor. Realistically:

  • Scottish: aim 1,800+
  • RUK: aim 1,900+ (and often AAA predictions needed)
  • International: aim 2,200+ — only 21 places means competition is brutal

3. The interview (Edinburgh Assessment Day)

Edinburgh's interview is NOT a typical MMI — it's a half-day Assessment Day with two components:

Part 1 — Multi-station MMI

  • 4 stations, each 10–12 minutes long (longer than typical 5-min MMIs)
  • One interviewer per station
  • Stations cover: motivation, ethics, communication, problem-solving, NHS awareness

Part 2 — Group Exercise

  • Small team of applicants
  • Given a problem or presentation task
  • ~25–35 minutes preparation + presentation
  • Assessed on: teamwork, communication, leadership, contributing without dominating

Interview window: January – February.

Decisions: March onwards.

The longer 10–12 minute MMI stations are distinctive — most schools use 5-minute stations. Edinburgh's longer format means deeper exploration of your reasoning rather than rapid-fire scenarios.

4. Course structure (6 years — mandatory intercalation in Y3)

Edinburgh's flagship MBChB is 6 years because intercalation in Y3 is mandatory, not optional.

Year 1 — Foundations (Pre-clinical)

  • Anatomy via full-body cadaveric dissection
  • Physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology
  • Microbiology, pathology
  • Communication and clinical skills foundations
  • Some early clinical contact

Year 2 — Continued Pre-clinical

  • Continued biomedical sciences
  • Practical clinical skills (resuscitation, history-taking)
  • Patient interviewing
  • Continued anatomy + physiology + pathology

Year 3 — BMedSci (Intercalation, mandatory)

  • All Edinburgh medics intercalate for an Hons BMedSci
  • ~25 BMedSci subject options including:
    • Anatomy
    • Biochemistry
    • Neuroscience
    • Pharmacology
    • Psychology
    • Sports Science Medicine
    • Zoology
    • Biomedical Sciences
  • Full year of research-led study
  • Dissertation submission
  • Graduate with BMedSci (Hons) at end of Y3

Year 4 — Junior Clinical

  • Begins clinical placements proper
  • Specialty introductions
  • Hospital + GP placements

Year 5 — Senior Clinical

  • Specialty rotations (medicine, surgery, paediatrics, O&G, psychiatry)
  • Multi-site rotations across Lothian + Borders + Fife

Year 6 — Final / Pre-FY1

  • Pre-foundation assistantship
  • Emphasis on general medicine, acute medicine, emergency, surgery, anaesthetics, intensive care
  • Final assessments + national MLA + Prescribing Safety Assessment + electives

Teaching mix: Lectures + small-group + tutorials + full-body dissection + clinical skills + simulation + extensive clinical placements.

Anatomy method: Full-body cadaveric dissection — Edinburgh has world-class anatomy facilities (the school has one of the longest unbroken traditions in cadaveric dissection in the UK).

5. Where you'll be: clinical placements (Lothian + South Scotland)

Edinburgh's clinical training is concentrated in NHS Lothian with peripheral placements across South Scotland.

Main teaching hospitals:

  • Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh (RIE) — flagship teaching hospital, Major Trauma Centre, transplant centre
  • Western General Hospital (Edinburgh)
  • Royal Hospital for Children and Young People (Edinburgh — paediatrics)
  • Royal Edinburgh Hospital (mental health)

Peripheral placement sites:

  • Borders General Hospital (Melrose)
  • Victoria Hospital (Kirkcaldy, Fife)
  • St John's Hospital (Livingston)
  • GP placements across Edinburgh, Lothian, Borders, Fife

Edinburgh University provides accommodation support for distant placements (Borders, Fife).

Why this matters: Edinburgh's clinical footprint is smaller than Aberdeen's or Cardiff's — almost all placements are within ~1 hour of central Edinburgh. Good for continuity, less so if you wanted big geographical variety.

6. Intercalation (mandatory in Y3)

Edinburgh's intercalation is built into the course as Y3 — not optional. You graduate with BMedSci (Hons) in addition to MBChB.

This is rare — only Edinburgh, Glasgow (similar mandatory intercalation), and Cambridge (via Tripos Part II) build BSc-level research into the standard course.

7. Fees & funding (2026/27 entry)

StatusAnnual fee
Scottish£0 (SAAS-funded for all 6 years)
RUK~£9,250 (verify)
InternationalHigh tier — verify directly with Edinburgh
EUInternational rates

Saving: Scottish-domiciled students save £55k+ over 6 years vs RUK (one of the largest fee discounts in UK medicine).

Y6 NHS Bursary: Standard for UK Student Finance England recipients in clinical years.

Scholarships: Numerous Edinburgh university-wide and Medical School scholarships, hardship funds, prize awards.

8. Widening participation (Scotland)

Reach Scotland: Edinburgh participates in the Reach programme for Scottish school students considering medicine.

Contextual data: Edinburgh contextualises applications using SIMD postcodes, school performance, FSM history, care experience, first-generation HE.

No formal reduced standard offer for contextually-flagged applicants — the AAA (or AAA* for RUK) standard applies, but contextual data shifts how UCAT and personal statement are weighted.

9. Student life & city

  • Edinburgh — Scotland's capital, ~520k population, cultural and tourism hub
  • University of Edinburgh's medical school is at Little France campus (RIE-adjacent), about 4 miles from city centre
  • The university has multiple campuses across Edinburgh; Old College + George Square are the historic central campuses
  • Cost of living high for a Scottish city — comparable to Bristol/Manchester, lower than London
  • Strong cultural scene — Festivals (Fringe in August), arts, music, history
  • Outdoor lifestyle — Holyrood Park, Pentlands, beach access, Highlands within 1 hour
  • Med school cohort medium-large (~266/year)
  • Edinburgh University Students' Association (EUSA) is one of the UK's largest
  • Strong international community
  • 4-hour train to London King's Cross (LNER)

10. The honest pros & cons

Pros

  • One of the world's oldest medical schools (since 1726) — unmatched heritage
  • Mandatory BMedSci intercalation — graduate with two qualifications
  • Full-body cadaveric dissection + world-class anatomy
  • Decile-based selection — fairer to applicants in any year
  • Free tuition for Scottish students (~£55k saving over 6 years)
  • Strong research environment — MRC, Wellcome, Roslin Institute
  • Edinburgh city + Scottish lifestyle — culture, history, outdoors
  • Distinctive Assessment Day format — group exercise rewards collaboration
  • High-quality clinical training at RIE + Western General

Cons

  • 6-year course (mandatory intercalation) — extra year of opportunity cost
  • AAA often needed for non-contextual RUK — academic bar is one of the highest in UK medicine
  • Extremely competitive — only 21 international places vs ~2,830 total applications
  • UCAT cut-off (1,650) is just a floor — competitive scores much higher
  • SJT Band 4 = auto-reject
  • Limited geographical placement variety — mostly Lothian + South Scotland
  • Cost of living in Edinburgh is high
  • Smaller cohort than Birmingham/Manchester — less variety in classmates
  • Mandatory BMedSci suits research-leaning students; less so if you just want to qualify quickly

11. Should you apply here?

Apply if you:

  • Are Scottish — value is unmatched (free tuition + lower UCAT bar)
  • Have AAA potential or already-achieved
  • Are interested in academic / research medicine
  • Want a built-in BSc (BMedSci) without an optional extra year
  • Want full-body dissection + traditional teaching
  • Like Edinburgh city + Scottish lifestyle
  • Have a UCAT in the top decile

Probably skip if you:

  • Don't have AAA potential
  • Are RUK and won't get top-decile UCAT
  • Want a 5-year course (Edinburgh is 6 years mandatory)
  • Don't want a BMedSci research year
  • Want big-city placement variety
  • Have an SJT Band 4 (auto-rejected)
  • Are international without ~2,200+ UCAT (only 21 places/year)
  • Want geographical placement variety beyond Lothian
