Introducing OpenEdit: Open-source agentic video editor

OpenEdit is an open-source agent-driven editing pipeline that ships with VEED Engine: our faster, more efficient, and free closed-source renderer.

It turns a text prompt into a finished viral video with animated captions and complex motion graphics burned into the footage.

No timeline and no UI to learn. You install it as a skill and tell your agent what you want — it transcribes the audio, designs a caption style that fits the footage, and renders the clip.

The video above was animated, edited, and rendered in OpenEdit.

Try it

npx skills add veedstudio/open-edit

Then, in your agent:

Add subtitles to my video [VIDEO]

Or run /open-edit on a selected clip. One to three minutes later, you get a captioned MP4 back, and a preview window opens.

Then keep prompting

  • "Make the yellow darker, move the text up a bit."
  • "Add motion graphics to the revenue numbers."
  • "Using the Figma MCP, take this layout and build a branded subtitle style for my podcast."
  • "Run 6 agents in parallel, each with its own caption system."

OpenEdit edits footage. It doesn't generate it—bring your own from whatever you already use. If you want a talking head from a script, the VEED MCP does that with Fabric, which is paid and burns credits like every other text-to-video model.

Under the hood

  • Agent-agnostic. Tested with Claude Code, Codex, and Gemini. The skill prepares the runtime and loads its AGENTS.md explicitly, so it isn't tied to one model.
  • Our own HTML-to-video renderer. You style captions in HTML and CSS, but there's no headless browser in the pipeline. In early internal benchmarks it ran up to 2.2x faster than tools that drive Chrome—that’s our own testing, not a published comparison. Reproducible benchmarks and the analysis are coming in the next few weeks.
  • Transcription built in. The default workflow gives you access to VEED’s transcription when you provide a VEED account. Your audio — not the video — is uploaded and stored to transcribe it, and the limits are whatever your VEED account already has.
  • Licensing and the closed part. The editor is Apache-2.0. The renderer binaries are closed source under PolyForm Shield 1.0.0—you can sell what you make, no payment to us. You're also not stuck with them—composition doesn't depend on our renderer, so if a closed binary is a dealbreaker, you can render through Chrome instead.

What's missing—read this before installing:

  • Apple Silicon Mac on macOS 26 (Tahoe) only. Not Intel, not earlier macOS. Windows and Linux support is something we intend to build; how we prioritize it depends on the demand we see.
  • No paid subscriptions
  • V1 is built around captions.

Try it out yourself and post what comes back. Especially if it's ugly.
