Trip from hell, is my friend group salvageable?
I need some heavy advice regarding my friend group. All names changed for obvious reasons.
TLDR long post
My friend group of 5 included my boyfriend, Michael, my two best friends, Isabel and Alex, and Alex’s boyfriend, Dean. We are all in our very early 20s and took a week-long vacation in the state. We have been planning this trip for about a year, and I should have seen some signs before the trip even started. For example, the amenities people wanted for the house that we stayed in. A grill, hot tub, pool, pool table, and 3 separate rooms with 3 separate full bathrooms. Alex wanted the hot tub and private pool, while Dean wanted the pool table, and Michael wanted a grill. All were completely doable except early on, Alex had something to say about the price; the house we chose was $2081. I told her I would have to take off the extra amenities so the group can split it, but she wanted to keep all of them. I caved and just stated that as a group they can all pay me $170 and I’ll cover the rest of the costs. I got my money before the trip happened; Michael gave me $250 though.
The 2nd thing that happened before the trip was that we had scheduled to go to the beach, which we were all up for. However Isabel isn’t fond of the sun so I brought up to the group that we should buy a nice canopy to accommodate them. I talked to people about it multiple times, and everyone was in agreement; it was $139.99, and Michael bought it.
The 3rd thing that happened before the trip was the tickets. The overall costs for the tickets were $247.93. I made multiple announcements in our group chat that tickets should be bought at a certain time because some are time-sensitive. Michael, Isabel, and I paid for the tickets in a reasonable time but Alex and Dean had to be informed in the group chat and in person multiple times. Dean’s excuse is that he was waiting for something on his credit card, but this was an excuse for a month. And Alex said that she had no money to pay for the tickets on time and was waiting for money. We all had jobs, and Alex just recently bought a 700 dollar PC off FB Marketplace. All tickets were bought before the trip.
The 4th and final thing that happened for the trip is that Michael took over meal planning for the entire trip just to get something off my hands. We came up with a pizza night, rib night, steak night, and leftover night. Everyone was in agreeance an nobody protested.
Here is where things took a turn, Dean said that for a lunch one day he could cook for the grouple chicken quesadilla’s and Micheal made a joke about his culinary skills, which I was in agreeance with the group that the joke was unnecessary, and told him in private after our call to apologize. The reason Michael thought it was ok to joke about it was that Alex had told me multiple stories about Dean’s cooking. All not good, and she even said that herself.
We’re finally on the trip, Micheal has not reached out, but apparently Dean is completely over it but told nobody but Alex. By the end of the first night of the trip, we all find ourselves in the hot tub. We were all ok until we started doing impressions, and Dean, thinking he had the best impression in the room, shushed us while talking over our impressions and then slightly splashed water in Michael’s face. Micheal didn’t like this and splashed back which made Dean splash again and Micheal exited the hot tub and the fun ended there.
The 2nd day we had a nice day and had an early dinner, which so happened to have a pool table in the restaurant. After eating Micheal challenged Dean to a pool game, where Dean accepted but proceeded to angrily play a game of pool, mumble under his breath, and get pretty aggressive over what was supposed to be a friendly game. I try to make friendly commentary, and so does Alex, but after the 3rd game Alex pulls Dean into the parking lot and scolds him about it privately. We have a good rest of our evening.
On the third day, Dean and Michal are cooking breakfast. Dean says that Michael gave him unwanted criticism on his way of cooking pancakes, and Michael states that Dean explicitly asked for his help and he gave his advice, and that he blatantly lied to me, Isabel, and Alex. Alex and I are obviously on our boyfriend’s side. We went to a petting zoo that day; while there Micheal asked if anyone would like to feed the otters. Nobody piped up. He paid to feed the otters himself; Dean took the food and started feeding the otters with the food Michael paid for while ignoring Michael. Alex states that the keeper was giving him the otter food and indulging in a conversation with him that he couldn’t get away from. The rest of the day is ok; however, this seemed to be the start of Dean keeping his distance from me and obviously keeping his distance from Michael.
That night we watched Twilight. We played a game as a group where if we as a collective find something cringy or embarrassing, we all drink. The boys just drank, though, and were the only ones drinking by the end. They both got heavily plastered. While the movie is still going, Michael gets up to get water and pace around the kitchen but still engages with the group. Dean later on states that Michael’s pacing made him nervous and drink more, which is why he was in the state that he was in for the rest of the night. At the time, Dean makes a joking comment about how Michael can’t handle his alcohol; Michael jokes back about how yes, he can’t handle his alcohol, but bets Dean he can’t go blunt for blunt with him. Dean loudly asks Micheal is he (r-word)? And of course he can’t go blunt for blunt with him. Dean and Alex are both asthmatics. Alex quickly shuts down the conversation, and we try to end the night there. Michael throws up, and I take care of him, but Dean is crying to Isabel outside at the hot tub about Alex and how much he loves her. I pull Alex for a private chat in the living room, and Michal comes out of the room and is there as well. From what Alex told me, because this memory is very fuzzy, it is that I started the conversation, but just let Michael talk, which made her uncomfortable because I was the one who pulled her for a chat. When she brought this up, I apologized profusely and still do for putting her in that situation.
However, during that chat Micheal states while he is talking that Dean seems like the person who hasn’t been sucker punched, which of course made her even more uncomfortable, and we all end the night. I later state publicly that I don’t agree with this comment and that it was inappropriate. The next morning, Dean apologises for how drunk he got last night, and I accept it, but I told him that he needs to have a one-on-one talk with Michael, which is something Alex has been telling him all trip. I have also been telling Michael to pull Dean aside privately all trip, and it never happened. That night, Michael cooked ribs and broccoli for everyone, and I made baked mac and cheese. The next morning Michael and I woke up late, completely my fault, and told the group to do the group activity without us and we’ll meet them there. This did not make them happy, as it was scheduled to rain. On the day it rained for 2 minutes, we met up with the group and had a nice time. Since it rained, Isabel, Dean, and Alex went to the beach while Michael and I stayed home and cooked them a steak dinner with veggie and meat skewers. They came home with lunch that they had as a group and barely ate the food. The next day we packed up and left to go back home.
After the trip, everyone wanted to get some things off their chest in a call. The original call was supposed to happen after Dean, Isabel, and Alex got back from a movie, but they got caught up and left the theater near 11 pm. The 3 of them called us at 11 at night; Dean got on the phone with an attitude, and that call got us nowhere. We scheduled a more organized call, which also went nowhere. Everyone supposedly got out their grievances; Michael apologized a lot, but Alex and Dean thought there were a lot of buts after his apologies and didn’t take it as him owning up to what he did. They mentioned that they felt put off by Michael and were talked to passively aggressively throughout the entire trip and avoided him due to that. Michael stated that he and I felt isolated from the 3 of them, and Dean did not apologize for calling him the R-word (despite Alex saying he did) and said that Michael’s pacing made him uncomfortable, making him drink more, and that the blut for blut comment was unacceptable and disrespectful because he was saying it to two asthmatics.
There was also an issue on Alex’s side where we had too many leftovers, and aside from throwing them away, Alex wanted to keep them; however alex was the only one with the cooler, so they went with her. Her issue was that we didn’t make small enough portions for there to be no leftovers, but to combat that Michial and I were the only ones eating the leftovers all trip while they went out. Alex also refused to pay back Michael for the tent that we didn’t use for the beach because they mentioned to me over and over again that they didn’t have the money. She never outwardly expressed that she didn’t want to get it. Alex also, on the call, said to Michael in front of the group that she didn’t see Michael as her friend, didn’t know why he felt that they were, and called him an attachment to me. We’ve been dating 4 years, and all but Dean went to high school together. The call lasted till 1 in the morning, and we all hung up, stating that we had gotten everything off our chests and that they felt better.
Come to find out nobody felt better and just lied about feeling better. I found this out when I went to get smoothies with Alex, and the group is currently planning my birthday. Alex asked about the food situation and if Michael was going to cook, which I said no, and she sighed a sigh of relief. I asked her what that was about and apparently nobody liked his cooking, and nobody, especially Dean, has forgiven him. Michael thinks we all forgave Dean and isolated him, and I had to tell Alex that out of respect for Michael I cannot hang around Dean and I won’t put him in any situation with Dean, and she said the same about Michal.
But as I said, my birthday is coming up; I am deathly afraid of Dean not being able to contain himself and making the atmosphere tense. While Alex agrees with me that Dean is not innocent, she clearly thinks that Michael was the main problem and should be the one who’s reaching out to the rest of the group, which I think is unfair. My problem is, is that for the past year I have gone above and beyond for everyone’s birthdays, with mine so happening to be the last. I am not going to be happy if no one can get it together in the span of a couple of weeks, and I’m going to have to make some even more difficult decisions about my friend group. I desperately need advice on how to navigate this moving forward, not only with my boyfriend, but with my friend group. Is this salvageable?
