Male Dark Romance Fans : Let's Talk About That

They exist. They are more visible than people think. I see sometimes on social media men doing reviews or recomendation about ( straight) dark romance. Some even do content mimicking the mmcs and the audience, mostly female, is eating that up, according to the comments(!).

The first thing to understand is that male dark romance fans rarely announce themselves as such. They know it sound bad. Indeed.

their arguments are always the same tought, delivered with the confidence of someone who has never once been asked to examine them. And who benefit from them.

"It's just fun."

Fun for whom exactly ? Because the "fun" here is a woman being stalked, raped, dominated, and learning to enjoy it. That's the fun. And a man who finds that fun — who seeks it out, who defends it publicly — is telling you something about himself that he apparently doesn't realize he's saying out loud. I mean, what sick world we are in, who allow men to say they love content where woman are abused? It tell me everything i need to know about them, anyways.

"You're so boring / such a buzzkill."

Classic anti feminist take.

Translation : your refusal to find rape or domestic abus entertaining is personally inconvenient to me. The problem is not the content. The problem is you, for noticing what the content is. Let me have fun imaginating i am abusung a woman and she learn sucessfully to enjoy it.

"It's just exploring dark themes."

Funny, how the dark theme(s) is never THEM, their kinds, being abused.

Exploring dark themes means treating them as dark. Horror explores murder without making the murderer the romantic hero. Literary fiction explores trauma without eroticizing it. Dark romance does not explore rape. It repackages it as passion and sells it with a Spotify soundtrack. These are not the same thing and a man who conflates them either cannot or will not see the difference.

"Women love it so it can't be misogynistic."

This one. This one specifically. The logic that anything consumed by women is automatically feminist and beyond criticism. By this reasoning, internalized misogyny doesn't exist. Socialization doesn't exist. The entire field of feminist media criticism doesn't exist. Women are floating free of culture, making purely individual choices uninfluenced by anything. How convenient.

This is not an argument. It is the absence of one, dressed as progressive thought.

What their presence actually reveals :

A man who seeks out, defends, and celebrates content in which women are raped and manipulated and hit and dominated and learn to want it — is a man who finds that scenario desirable. Not as a dark theme to be examined. As entertainment. As wish fulfillment, at least vicariously.

That is not a small thing to notice. That is the entire point.

And the fact that this content exists at massive commercial scale, with male fans, male producers, male musicians writing songs about rape scenes with 200 million streams — tells you something about who this genre ultimately serves. Even when it is written by women. Even when it is read by women. Even when it is defended in the name of female agency.
