I'm writing this as an Indian because I believe **we deserve better mobile networks, better coverage, and better telecom policy.**

This isn't about supporting any telecom company.

This is about asking our government to make better decisions with a national resource that belongs to every Indian.

**Radio spectrum is public property. It belongs to the people of India—not to the government, and not to telecom companies.** The government's job is to manage it in a way that maximizes public benefit.

Right now, I believe several policy decisions are preventing India from getting the best possible telecom network.

# 1. Too much commercially useful spectrum remains unused or delayed.

This is probably the biggest mistake.

India has taken years to make some important mobile spectrum fully available, including bands such as **600 MHz**, while portions of other valuable mobile bands have also remained unused or underutilized for long periods.

Every year that usable spectrum sits idle means:

* Worse indoor coverage
* Slower rural expansion
* More network congestion
* Lower network capacity
* Slower improvement in customer experience

**Spectrum should not remain unused for years.**

If it is suitable for commercial mobile services, **auction it. Assign it. Put it to work.**

Whether it goes to Jio, Airtel, Vi, BSNL, or a future operator is less important than making sure **the people of India actually benefit from it.**

We deserve better.

# 2. India needs a clear roadmap for 600 MHz.

The 600 MHz band is one of the most valuable spectrum bands for mobile networks.

It provides:

* Better indoor coverage
* Better rural connectivity
* Wider coverage from each tower
* Lower deployment costs
* Better overall user experience

Instead of leaving India behind while other countries move forward, the government should publish a clear long-term roadmap for commercial use of the 600 MHz band.

# 3. BSNL has not received the level of attention needed to become a real competitor.

The government has announced revival packages and assigned BSNL additional spectrum.

Those are positive steps.

But they are **not enough**.

If the government genuinely wants BSNL to compete with private operators, it must continue investing until BSNL can offer a comparable network experience.

That means:

* Faster rollout
* More network sites where coverage is weak
* Better network density
* Better optimization
* Continued spectrum support where justified

A weak BSNL helps nobody.

A strong BSNL benefits every Indian by increasing competition.

# 4. India should prioritize public benefit over keeping spectrum idle.

Spectrum is not a trophy.

It is not meant to remain unused while millions of Indians struggle with poor indoor signal and inconsistent coverage.

The government's responsibility should be simple:

**If spectrum can improve connectivity, make it available as quickly as reasonably possible.**

Keeping valuable spectrum unused for years does not help consumers, businesses, students, hospitals, or the digital economy.

# 5. Competition should remain a national priority.

India benefits when multiple operators are strong enough to compete.

A healthy BSNL alongside strong private operators creates pressure for everyone to improve network quality, coverage, innovation, and customer service.

That benefits every Indian, regardless of which SIM card they use.

# What should change?

* Make commercially suitable spectrum available faster instead of letting it remain unused for years.
* Publish a clear roadmap for the 600 MHz band.
* Continue strengthening BSNL until it becomes a genuinely competitive nationwide operator.
* Ensure spectrum policy is focused on improving connectivity and public benefit.
* Increase transparency so citizens can easily see which spectrum is assigned, which is idle, and why.

India is becoming one of the world's largest digital economies.

Our telecom policy should reflect that ambition.

**Spectrum belongs to the people of India.**

It should not remain idle for years when it could be improving coverage, increasing competition, and delivering a better mobile experience.

**We deserve better.**
