Real Village vs Just Placing Stuff

Only been playing about 10 days but finding this very relaxing.

On looking at other villages in the see prospective friend mode, it looks like people just drop stuff randomly/where there's room. I've been trying to make mine look like a real village though.

Is there a 'standard' way most do or...?
