Nap training? When it did get better?

6 - 12 months

Wondering when naps finally “click” like night sleep did.

My daughter is 6.5 months old. I know naps are harder, but she took really well to night training. Crying was always minimal, and although it took about 3 full weeks of consistency to get to no tears at bedtime, she slept through the night from night one.
We’ve been nap training for about a month now. Our current schedule is 2.25/2.5/2.5/2.75-3

Recently, nap 1 has gotten significantly better. There’s usually minimal protest, she’s started connecting cycles without waking, and she’ll often nap for around 1.5 hours

Naps 2 and 3 are still more inconsistent. She’ll usually protest still for 5–10 minutes before falling asleep. She also rolls back and forth a lot, which I’m not sure is contributing to her getting more worked up, although she’s comfortable sleeping on either her back or belly.

She’ll often wake 30–40 minutes into a nap as well (mostly second) Sometimes she only cries for a few minutes before going back to sleep, and other times she’ll cry on and off for 10–15 minutes before resettling. Occasionally she won’t go back to sleep at all.

For those who have been through this, does daytime sleep eventually mature to the point where they transition between cycles more seamlessly? Did you notice a big improvement with age or once you transitioned to 2 naps?

I don’t think she’s quite ready for 2 naps yet. She still falls asleep for all 3, and I’ve been told around 10 hours of total wake time is about the max for a 3-nap schedule. We’re already there, so adding more wake time would start pushing bedtime past 8pm with her usual 7am wake.

Just curious when naps started feeling more consistently “easy” for everyone, I’m having a hard time judging what’s normal adjustment period and signs of needing more wake time / dropping a nap
