Their arguments the claiming that Ainz is "overly paranoid," "cowardly," or "wasting opportunities to make friends with New Worlders" rest on a deeply flawed premise: they view the world of Overlord from an omniscient audience perspective, rather than from Ainz's position inside the fog of war.

Looking closely at the narrative of Overlord, every action of Ainz that appears "excessive" is actually a highly logical risk-management calculation rooted in the following concrete facts:

1. The Shalltear Incident: A Psychological Turning Point and Proof of an Existential Threat

Many critics assume Ainz was paranoid from the start, forgetting that he was initially quite relaxed and open. He went adventuring as Momon, saved Carne Village, and interacted warmly with figures like Gazef Stronoff.

However, the brainwashing of Shalltear Bloodfallen via Downfall of Castle and Country changed everything.

• A World-Class Threat: Shalltear is one of Nazarick's strongest NPCs (Level 100, custom-built for 1v1 combat). If someone of her caliber can be turned into an enemy in an instant without warning, it proves that a hostile faction in the New World possesses a World Item the only item category in YGGDRASIL capable of ignoring game laws and completely shifting the balance of power.

• Ainz’s Emotional Trauma: Ainz was forced to kill the "child" of his guildmate (Peroroncino) with his own hands. Executing Shalltear was the most traumatizing experience for Ainz in the New World. To him, a single moment of carelessness directly leads to the death of a family member.

2. High-Stakes Logic and Zero Margin for Error

Why can’t Ainz simply "relax" and befriend local New Worlders?

• Asymmetric Risk: For New Worlders, losing a life or a kingdom is a local tragedy. For Ainz, the destruction of Nazarick means erasing the sole remaining legacy of the 41 members of Ainz Ooal Gown the friends he loves and misses deeply.

• Infiltration & Proxy War Risks: No matter how innocent or benevolent New Worlders may appear, they can easily be manipulated, brainwashed, or turned into sleeper agents by hostile factions like the Slane Theocracy or True Dragon Lords. Trusting New Worlders without absolute vigilance would be a reckless security oversight for Nazarick.

3. The "Supreme Ruler" Facade Is Self-Sacrifice, Not Fear of His NPCs

Critics often reduce Ainz's relationship with his NPCs to "Ainz is afraid of looking foolish in front of his subordinates." This is an extremely superficial reading.

• Leadership Responsibility: Maintaining the image of an all-knowing ruler is done purely to preserve Nazarick's internal stability and morale. The NPCs (such as Albedo, Demiurge, and Shalltear) are programmed with absolute loyalty, but they also possess extreme personalities that could destabilize if their ruler showed weakness or indecision.

• The Mental Toll on Satoru Suzuki: Satoru Suzuki (Ainz’s true identity) was an average office worker with no political or military background. Leading an entity as powerful as Nazarick forces him to constantly roleplay to prevent internal chaos and ensure his NPCs remain safe. This isn't cowardice; it is an incredible act of dedication and mental sacrifice.

4. "Absolute Security" Is the Only Valid Survival Strategy

In a world where hidden entities potentially wield Player-level power (such as the Platinum Dragon Lord or the Black Scripture), acting naively courteous or trusting strangers for the sake of "friendship" is suicidal.

• Ainz operates under a classic military doctrine: Preparing for the worst-case scenario. Until the faction responsible for brainwashing Shalltear is identified and completely neutralized, Nazarick is technically in a state of cold war / maximum readiness.

So, accusing Ainz of being cowardly or overly paranoid reflects a fundamental failure to grasp the sheer stakes of his situation.

Ainz isn't playing a social life simulator; he is navigating an unfamiliar political and magical war zone where a single misstep could mean permanent death or enslavement for the NPCs he considers his own children.

Ainz paranoia is not a sign of character flaw it is the ultimate proof of his devotion, responsibility, and the most rational self-defense strategy a ruler could adopt.

They often ignore the bigger and deadlier problem that is right before their eyes: the Shalltear brainwashing incident that deeply traumatized Ainz in the New World.
