Snezhnaya feels more like generic european fantasy than a slavic-inspired region.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the Tsaritsa’s design. She looks divine, and I’m also happy that HoYo revealed so many male characters. My issue is that most of the new Snezhnayan designs do not immediately feel Slavic or Russian-inspired.

I know Genshin regions are never direct copies of real countries, but they usually have a clear cultural identity. Snezhnaya has used Russian and Slavic references for years: the Tsaritsa, Zapolyarny Palace, Russian names, imperial imagery and the Fatui’s heavily militarised structure. Because of that, I expected the character designs to reflect those influences more strongly.

Instead, many of them look like they came from Barbie and The Nutcracker (ik that Nutcracker is russian) or from very generic European winter fantasy.

Vodyanitsa being the star of the Korolevskiy performing troupe and the Snezhnayan opera house makes sense in theory, because ballet, opera and theatre could fit an Imperial Russian setting perfectly. But her actual Hydro fairy/mermaid aesthetic feels strangely disconnected from the colder, heavier and more politically intimidating image of Snezhnaya that the Fatui created throughout the game. Also the fairy military? Really...

It also feels like HoYo is trying to fit every possible fantasy archetype into one region: fairies, mermaid, a vampire-looking man and several new organisations. Individually, those ideas may be interesting, but together they make the region feel less culturally coherent. I expected Snezhnaya to expand Slavic fantasy, not replace it with generic European fantasy creatures. I expected characters inspired by rusalki, leshy (i saw some monster like that in trailer thats a plus), domovoi or Baba Yaga could still look elegant and fantastical while feeling much more distinctive.

About clothes designs tbh I expected more inspiration from sarafans, kokoshniks, kaftans, military greatcoats, ushanka hats etc Imperial court fashion, Orthodox art, Fabergé craftsmanship, Gzhel porcelain or Slavic folklore.

The environments and industrial imagery seem more recognisably Snezhnayan than the cast itself. Maybe the full region will have stronger Slavic influences, but based on the reveal, I understand the disappointment. The characters are beautiful, but beautiful is not the same as culturally distinctive. After years of waiting, I'm disappointed.

Snezhnaya Doesn’t Feel Slavic Enough
